I choosed the scene when Majid tells the truth to Sabah about the financial situation of their family. The scene is very important because in that moment the whole situation is changing, the perception of Majid about the role of the Muslim woman in the society is changing. Majid has supporting his family for several years because the money from their father finished it and he did not want that her sisters’ work. Sabah manages to convince her brother that their family” needs to change”, that he must let his niece to take her own decisions.
Sabah says something very important” We are as much Canadians as we are Arabs” meaning that even she was born in Syria, she lives in Canada for many years, she consider Canada her home as much as she consider Syria.
In this scene like in others there are a lot of close ups, concentrating on the face, especially on Majid who at some ocazie cries when she tells the truth to her sister. We see on his face the deception that he could not take care of his sisters and he realize that lost control, that his sister is seeing a Canadian man, his wife left him and his niece doesn’t want to marry with the boy he chosen. In addition, there are medium shots; these are used especially in the dialogues scenes and zoom lenses for getting those close ups.
When Sabah talks with her brother, her mother talks with Stephen and its very interesting how those moments are intercalating and how that close ups shows how Sabah mother is studying Stephen.
This scene is representative because it anticipates the final, which is a happy one, final who is very similar with the starting of the film.
