France was involved in two wars. One in Europe, and the other in North America. France thought that Nouvelle France cost a lot and it brought little. Great Britain had an important navy, beeing able to stop French supply ships from reaching New France. English had a greater military power than French: New France only had 5000 soldiers at its disposal, while the 13 British colonies could count on an army of 23 000 men.
In these conditions, the bishop of Quebec, gouverner Vaudreuil, all the military officials and colonial administrators wrote to the king of France, Louis XV. They described the insufferable situation and recommended that reinforcements had to be sent with great urgency. It was in vain. Paris didn't answer. It appears that the mother country had already abandoned Canada. |

Definitely a melodrama. Because there are several elements that define this genre. For example, the film presents the vicissitudes suffered by France, a virtuous character. There are also typical or, if you want, stereotypical characters such as the the noble hero (the main bărbătești character, Francois le Gardeur), the long-suffering heroine (France), and of course the cold-blooded villain (Xavier). The plot of the film involves sufferance, failed love (because of the hand of the villain), self sacrifice and death. An emotional theme, I would say. So, the plot is a melodramatic one. The end of a melodrama is usually a happy end. But it is not the case for Nouvelle France. |

I can't say that I disliked the film, but I don't think I would watch it again. Maybe just for observing some details. The plot is to commercial, and I think it's done in a Hollywood's way. It cames to my mind Mel Gibson's Patriot, or Oliver Stone's Alexander. The script is too long and everything develops slowly. Even the historic ground is realized mostly by spoken lines, and less by action. The cast is outstanding. It's too bad that Gerard Depardieu's character is poorly realized. But maybe is a suggestive way of pointing out the role of the church in the falling of Nouvelle France. As an achievement I would name the beautiful cinematography, the special effects and costumes design.
