“Mon oncle Antoine” hinges round the Quiet Revolution. The slow, quiet rhythm of the events that take place in the movie may be compared with the slow, gradually, long process of the Quiet Revolution. In the movie, there is something in progress, but what that is we cannot realize in the beginning neither as the events flow but only towards the end of the movie. That’s why some might loose their patience and give up watching.
To continue with Benoit, I assume he’s an observer because he observes everything, he keeps everything inside, without reacting to anything, although his attitude tells a lot. He’s little, hence he doesn’t have the enough experience to talk properly, to convince, to act in the right moments. He doesn’t even wait the right ocazie to make the decisive step or revolt against what he disagrees. In fact, his patience, his attitude of a good listener (the best attitude for him to take now) make the process to be slow, gradual and harmless. I think the French had the same attitude towards “the English stuff” (rules, attitudes, laws etc). Therefore, Benoint’s attitude might reflect the French attitude in the Quiet Revolution. The big boss’s attitude when throwing the presents might reflect the English attitude towards the French in the Quiet Revolution.
I believe the ascension, the good things that happen and the quiet process in the film might be a good point for “the chosen Christmas Day”.
Why “Mon oncle Antoine”? Apparently, Antoine hasn’t got any problems, but as the events flow he proves the contrary. Now, I ask myself a question: Weren’t the English as superficial as Antoine, in the process of the Quiet Revolution? Antoine shows us that he’s got a problem by drinking a lot, but he doesn’t reveal it until in the end of the movie exactly to “the patient Benoit”. _________________ Maria Pop |

| Mon oncle Antoine is a social fresco of a small community Québécoise before the Quiet Revolution. Beyond this fresco is Benoit who discover and perceive the world in his own way. He is a quiet spectator in the “show of life” who find out about human nature in its complexity “steeling” pieces of it by a half-open door. Benoit identifies all human feelings through another’s feelings. |

“Black comedy is a sub-genre of comedy and satire in which topics and events that are usually regarded as taboo are treated in a satirical or humorous manner while retaining their seriousness. Synonyms conține dark comedy, black humor, dark humor, and morbid humor.”
I don’t think it qualifies. A few funny scenes don’t make the movie a comedy; drama doesn’t exclude hilarious fragments. It’s just a drama with some funny scenes. |

| Mon oncle Antoine is at once a charming portrait of a mythical rural Quebec and a telling fable of Quebec at the dawn of the Quiet Revolution. This social tension between innocence and experience is given subtle dramatic form in a corning-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy, Benoit , who works for his uncle , the owner of the local general store and also the town's undertaker. We see the world through Benoit's eyes, including his first encounters with sex and death. The climactic scene, in which Benoit rides in a sleigh with his drunken uncle and the body of a dead youth, resonates with Canadian cultural mythology, the snowstorm an indication of the tempestuous winds of change about to come. |

| This film shows some of the aspects of the Canadian society from 1940. It is a view of the social conditions in Quebec from this time when the Catholic Church has its own role in the community in the most important events of life. The story is told from the point of view of a young boy of 15 years old, Benoit who grows up in his uncle’s house Antoine. He observed all around him without reacting so this period could be considered like a time of initiating in the “secrets” of life. All around him is petty. He can’t find a good exemple or a nice behavior tip for his education. Lie, unfaithful, alcohol, listlessness, indifference are the ways of the characters around him. I wonder what will be his life as an adult… |

| I think this is the drama of a man who thought his life was perfect or seems satisfied with it, but he descovers it is not so. Drinking is a way of hidding from yourself the problems rather then confronting them. He seems to have a succesfull family life, yet his wife is cheating on him, he seems to be the best in his job, yet he looses a body on the way home. |

| this film is very deep in my opinion. Not only the comming of age of little Benoit, but the struggle of a family in the mid 40's. There are impressive winter scenaries, and the part when Benoit is trying to protect his drunken uncle that has fallen out of the sledge is very well directed. Another scene that I remember is the close up of the rooms in the store. Poverty breathes out through every wooden piece, but there is a joy within Benoit soul that cannot be overlooked |
