Here's the exam procedure:
1. ESSAY to be written at home
A 2-page essay on a documentary film of your choice from the National Film Board website (click). This will analyse the film in terms of:
- release data, author's filmography
- theme and subject
- relevance for Canadian Studies
- film grammar in:
A. the whole film (dominant techniques used)
B. in one 1-minute sequence of your choice
(with more detail about shots, composition, focal length lens, camera movement, colour, editing, rhythm, sound)
- relevance of these techniques to the film's message and to its aesthetic quality
I would prefer these essays to be posted online on this forum.
If you cannot do this you may email these to me.
2. In class: WRITTEN
This will be a generalist discussion, aimed at your perception of Canadian Film, and not a technical talk.
Expect a couple of questions about things like:
- The relevance of the Canadian Films you have watched for your knowledge of Canada
- Canadian Films and Canadian Studies
- place of Canadian filmmakers in world filmmaking
- can Canadian filmakers compete with Hollywood? If so, how?
- priorities of Canadian film
- aesthetic achievement in Canadian film |
