The 1990 Crisis, Oka, Quebec, Canada
Anamaria Agoston
M.A. Canadian Studies, North University of Baia Mare, Romania

Abstract

In the summer of 1990, the Mohawk Nation stopped the free passage to reserve land which was being taken over against their consent by the Representatives of the Town of Oka. All this because the town of Oka was developing plans to expand a golf course on the place of a sacred Mohawk burial ground. Due to that, the Mohawks filed a land claim and tried to negotiate with the authorities. After a tense 77-day stand-off, the Mohawks put down their weapons and surrendered. Eventually, the Federal Government cancelled the project of the golf course expansion, but the local government still owns the land. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the behaviour of the Mohawk Warriors and the Quebec Police / the Canadian Military Force during the 1990 Crisis, Oka, Quebec, Canada and also the historical and socio-political background of its occurrence. (144 words)

Suggested titles:
1."Democracy" with weapons at Oka
The 1990 Crisis, Oka, Quebec, Canada

2. Government postpones Mohawks issues
The 1990 Crisis, Oka, Quebec, Canada

3. A 77- day stand-off at Oka
The 1990 Crisis, Oka, Quebec, Canada

Two worlds, one roof

- Abstract-

The intent of this paper is to highlight the role of women in the development of a new society focusing on the way the Europeans used the presence of Native women to penetrate new territories and establish new markets.
As the first relationships between Native People and Europeans were established mainly through the fur trade a new society dominated by men was formed. Therefore the idea of a marriage between Europeans and Native women was no more a surprise. Moreover, from the male perspective, both White and Native, this marriage had its advantages. Further on, it is essential to highlight the customs and traditions which were preserved from both cultures and, moreover, which were the implications of being the wife of a white man.
Finally, the research ends up by noticing how these interracial marriages have changed nowadays and especially how are these seen by the modern societies.

Art for art or art for necessity?
Abstract:

Art is one of the oldest means of expression. It is unspoken words, hidden thoughts, daring ideas and feelings clothed in harmonious shapes and colours. The present paper attempts to uncover these surface strata and analyze the background facts and psychology that gave birth to Inuit women's matchless graphic art. How art emerged in an environment which seems impossible even for survival is a provocative question to answer. Therefore, the first part of this paper shall focus on the beginnings of this art in the general picture of Inuit women's way of life. Then, the status of their art in the world and its regarding as art or simple crafts done for money shall be a second point of analysis. Thirdly, for narrowing the panorama and for offering a specific example, depicting the contributions of an appreciated female Inuit artist, Ovilu Tunnilie, may be an adequate option.

MesajTrimis: 13/04/2010 18:38    Titlul subiectului: Abstract: Hockey Raspunde cu citat (quote)

My papers is about Hockey. I tried to answear a few questions, like for example: What is Hockey? What about the “Richard Riot”?. But first, a few elemental things about hockey, like what kind of gear do you need to play hockey or what are the rules in hockey. I also wrote about two very important hockey players, important for Canada I mean. One could say these were THE MOST important hockey players that Canada ever had, of course Canada still has very good players, but Wayne Gretzky and Maurice Richard are the top two who went down in history. Another topic worth mentioning is that Canada won a lot of gold medals at the Olympics in several years. As a conclusion my paper will contain general information that one should know about hockey and its relation with Canada.

To Anamaria: Why was this called a crissis? Did the natives block the road for 77 days? If they did so I think the police was entirely entitled to use force against them, wheather it was an important road or not. And about the land: did the natives have papers or anything at all that showed that that land was their?

To Claudia: "the role of women in the development of a new society focusing on the way the Europeans used the presence of Native women to penetrate new territories and establish new markets." did the women play any role in those days? From what I know, women didn't play any role in history, like they didn't have rights, nobody asked them anything and nobody wanted their opinion, I just say

"Therefore the idea of a marriage between Europeans and Native women was no more a surprise." I don't know many things about the indians, but did they agree or did their "traditions" allow marriage with other races?

to Robert: Thanks for asking me. it was a crisis because the Mohawks had been trying for centuries to get their land back from the authorities (either French or British, and now Quebecois government).
They protested first, then blocked the road ( when their voices were not heard). It was a little road, but an access to their reserve land. Other people, non-natives felt the need to support them and blocked other roads.
The natives "used to have" papers for the land, but they were "tricked" by "the authorities". i 'll try to clarify their situation on Thursday, even if I think "the hat is too big for me"...
:-)
I can't wait to hear about hockey, I know so little about it. your abstract is clear enough for me.

to Robert: sorry for responding. yes, that's true , they didn't have rights but they were asked what to do.
See F. N. People where there were the clan-mothers who were asked for advice before decision making. (not at all tribes)
If I know well, they encouraged marriages with other races in order to establish good relations with other races. Am I right? Maybe Claudia can answer you in details. ( from Anamaria)

ABSTRACT

Because of the official multicultural and bilingual government policies that are characteristic to Canada, this country is perceived as a mixture of races, peoples, and culture. As a result, Canadians are perceived differently from each corner of the world, through varying ideas and beliefs. The present research presents some of the most repeated myths about Canada and Canadians including their lifestyle, sports, language, weather, industry in order to perceive better and from a different point of view this universe.
The myths that are going to be examined will be limited to selected stereotypes held by Americans and some Europeans the purpose of which will be to gain a better understanding of Canada’s international reputation.

Well, not exactly Robert, my research will be dealing with the myths about Canada, but anyway there are some beliefs like : ''Canadians do not enjoy the same technology as Americans'' or ''Canadians ARE Americans'' (regarding this ''terrific''Canadian-American relationship :-D ) that I will develop in this presentation. This days everything spins around mass-media. Sociologically, mass communication within Canada is unique, this because Canada is situated near of the most big expoter in field, United States of America. We know that Canada is an multiculturalism and bilingual country, this leads a variety of cultures and languages.Mass-media include television or magazines. A magazine is good when it capture his reader, this depends of the categories that belongs and the ages on which is adressed at.
Most of the best knows magazines in Canada and oldest magazines, for example the ‘Maclean’s Magazine’ was founded in 1905, this demonstrate the strenght in canadian culture.
