With an insight of the English Canadian and French Canadian stereotypes, even those who are very fond of the French language might turn down the sound when hearing the language spoken in Quebec.
Despite the fact that this is a film about two cops and a serial killer, the story line is filled with jokes, and if you are not Canadian or have a strong knowledge of their culture you are most likely not to get all of them.

Bon Cop Bad Cop
The film is not only a comedy and crime film, but also an action film. Its main tone is both humorous and terrifying. It is humorous when the French Canadian and the English Canadian cliches are reflected in the main characters’ speech.
The action is happening so fast that it is sometimes difficult to follow. I don’t think that it could have been done without that agitation or “fast-paced acting.” (Jeremy Knox) What is more, I agree with Jeremy Knox who says that “if you are from Canada you’ll laugh, if you’re from the Northeast United-States you’ll giggle and if you’re from Utah you’ll need a translator and an explanation.” Maybe because the cliches are known only by those who live in Canada or those who are familiar with them. One would need translation if the viewer doesn’t know French.
After I have read Jeremy Knox’s review I found out new information about the film technique, I mean:” Canuel also manages to use the old Hollywood saw of mirroring the action in two places at once to very great effect.”
This was not new that he describes how a Canadian from Ontario wants to be seen by saying that:”Ward, the cop from Ontario is: polite, calm and courteous, follow the rules persona that every English-speaking Canadian wants to think ourselves as.”
I agree with him when he considers the film” a slick, fast-paced and graced with superb acting and a great screenplay.” That alertness stired the viewer. Even if the humorous screenplay was more important than acting, in other words, I payed more attention to the text than to the actors’ acting.
We find out that Bouchard, the bad cop, became authentic Canadian for:” Another cool thing is that he couldn’t be more authentic as a French Canadian unless the film had included a scene of him eating Joe Louis snack cakes and drinking Pepsi for breakfast.”
I don’t think that people outside Canada have noticed that. I didn’t.
Jeremy Knox affirms that:” it’s such a rare pleasure to see a 100% perfectly rational killer in a movie. I totally understand the guy’s logical, well thought out reasoning and agree with his methods. Hockey team from Canada moving to the US + Crass American commercializationfiltered= Murderous rampage. Makes sense to me!”
It doesn’t make sense to me. Is hockey that important to kill people for it? I disagree with that, but for the purpose of the film, to emphasize the Canadian aspect of the film, it is ok.
Furthermore, I found Brian Webster’s review that says that:” While Bon Cop, Bad Cop is about a murder investigation, this is a decidedly light-hearted film, more focused on teasing English and French Canadian cultures than in building suspense or scariness. At times, the comedy goes a bit over the top, and while much of it is widely accessible, there are times when it’s based on national inside jokes – if you’re not Canadian, you likely just won’t get it.” The same as Jeremy Knox, one cannot uuderstand it if he or she doesn’t speak both languages and something new suspense was not the aim of the movie.
Later he says:” While it would be nice for an international audience – including those in the lucrative U.S. market – to take an interest in this funny, well-made film, that’s neither realistic nor essential.” I didn’t get that, so the conflict is not real? Only the film presents it, but the relationship betweem the French and English Canadian is good then? (http://apolloguide.com/mov_fullrev.asp?CID=5422&Specific=6263)
Christopher Armstead considers that:” the film is without exception and without excuses run of the mill”. And that:”it lacks any real semblance of originality”.
Maybe that is true, but the humour was not that bad. "Lethal Weapon" was not that hilarious.
He adds that the only original part is the bilingual French and English conversations which in his opinion can be irritating. I agree but maybe because they are not used to reading subtitles as we are. (http://filmcriticsunited.com/boncop.html)
To sum up, the film was good and funny but not very original.I liked it and I would recommend it to those who like comedies and action film. |

This is a handicapped space ! You can’t park here.
David Bouchard : Yes, I can, I`m with you.
Martin Ward : ( Ward is angry about their car exploding ) ***** de shit de ***** de **** de TABERNAC !» (http://www.themoviequotes.com/202/Bon_Cop_Bad_Cop)
I have not not enjoyed a movie as musch as this in sometime. Brilliant…»(http://www.pulpmovies.com/2006/03/bon-cop-bad-cop/)

This film was the best example of canadian multiculturalism, because we were witnesses of combining the two main cultures.
When the movie started I thought it was something very american, because of the action. In fact, it is a combination of tragic and comedy. There are very well highlighted the canadian clichees, in a humouristic note, creating the ideea that the English and French differences make a very good team.
I think that not the action is the most enphasized in this film, but the differences between the two cops. |

| This film is one of the gratest movie that I had seen lately. The producer combine quality humor with action scenes, underline the difference between French Canada and English Canada. Its good-hearted probing of Canada's social and cultural balancing act likely will do more to promote harmony in Canada than a whole raft of political speeches. |
