Here's the most condensed summary of the film I could find on the net:
| Citat: | Synopsis :

I recommend you to read this Interview with Atom Egoyan on the PopMatters website. There Egoyan illuminate a great number of issues related to ARARAT.
Here are a few selections:
| Citat: | | I think with this film, there's an expectation that the film is going to finally tell the truth of what happened. And actually, that's not what it's about. |
So, then, I ask you, what is this about?
Or, take this:
| Citat: | | Ultimately, histories are transmitted by artifacts, by cultural objects that we can appreciate. But we don't usually understand how they were made. And the decisions behind the gesture to make something and the details that define that object require investigation. That idea threaded into the larger idea of the film, which is that history is not just about telling a story. Someone has to receive it, someone has to listen, someone has to be curious and investigate. |
Or, about the Film-within-film and its "truth":
| Citat: | | The artifact of Edward's film is not "truth." I think of him as someone who is a child of survivors, who has heard the stories as a child, and is making this film at the end of his career. I didn't want to be ironic about his film, to make fun of it, because that would have been tonally wrong. But there are a lot of clues that there is a separation between his film and my film. |
Please, read this interesting interview, and dig out whatever passages you find illuminating (or confusing). |

At the same time, I would direct you at a piece of very harsh criticism directed at Egoyan's film, A terrible story badly told. Some of it seems fairly prejudiced and injust --maybe because this critique appears on the World Socialist Website, and socialists have been traditionally adverse to the kind of relativization of history that postmodernism is so ready to produce.
However, some of the critic's arguments may make sense. Especially when he detects two apparently irreconciliable positions in Egoyan's film: that of the Postmodernist inclined to question and doubt every representation of history, and that of the Genocide Survivor, who calls for a recovery of his people's lost memory. Here's the discussion:
| Citat: | Egoyan is caught between two positions that are mutually exclusive: on the one hand, as someone initiated into the sacred rites of postmodernism, he essentially denies that objective interpretation of events or phenomena is possible. “The film is very much about interpretation,” he told Filmmaker magazine. “People have the right to interpret an object. They have the license to interpret something as they wish.... Nothing is fixed.”
On the other hand, the filmmaker insists on the reality “of the horrors that befell the Armenian population of Turkey in the years around 1915.” Well, which is it? If indeed “nothing” is fixed, then that includes the facts about the Armenian massacre. |
Well, what do you think of this? |

unfortunately, I wasn't able to atted the meeting, but I try catch up with the film. I am reading the script and looking at the picture. First, I have to thank our teacher, and I think you all agree, because he is going through all this trouble of posting all these for us. everyone can see that you really are passionate about this, or you wouldn't spend so much time as to post the scripts, and what is more, in two languages..make still shots and post them as well...so,
THANK YOU!
I'll re4ad the scripts and share my thoughts about the film. _________________ Monica - that's just me! |

though I haven't seen thefilm but read the script , I find the scene with the party at Raffi's house very ingenious and filled with symbols. the friends couldn't penetrate the real meaning and symbol of the poem..they took each word ad literam, reaching the conclusion that the girlfriend must have been crazy fr asking such a thing. the friends reacted exactly like "the boyfriend" who, maybe blinded by love, or unable t o penetrate the symbol, goes out and kills his mother. here we have the incapacity of , maybe , the oradinary man to see the whole, who sees only the fragment, only the piece and can't make up the whole picture. whereas, the girlfriend might have meant that she wanted to win the love of the boy's mother.
the director even goes further, he plays with the meanings of the word heart. just to ubderline how a simple word can symbolize a lot....." You know what they say... There's always a woman at the heart of it." _________________ Monica - that's just me! |

I have just read that Ararat is the highest volcano in Turkey and just by the Armenian border. But, the m,ost interesting and symbolic thing is that it is thought to be "the resting place of Noah's arch" ...so it might be thought as the craddle of new life after the genocid?> _________________ Monica - that's just me! |

the scene in the green house very well illustrates what the poem has just said: Raffi is caught in the middle. on one part there's the love for his mother, and the promise he had made to her, and on the other, the beloved woman who seeks and wants to be the first in Raffi's heart. _________________ Monica - that's just me! |

Finally, I got the movie...I have to tell you that it made a big impression on me..I cried a lot , it wasd very touching...
on one hand, it touched me because of my jewish part, and unvoluntarily, even before that subject comes up in the film, I compared the Armenian genocide with the Holocaust, the extermination of the Jews.
so, you can imagine how i was watching the movie.it`s a good thing I saw it alone, so I could let out my emotions, didn't have to hide my tears....
on the other hand, all this "subjectivity of history " makes me think about how naive people are.
first, i thought about sitting comfortablyback and just watching, but there were so many ideas that came to my mind during the film that i was holdng my pen and writing down everything i noticed.
i`ll try to shre mt thoughts _________________ Monica - that's just me! |

Thank you for this movie!
My grandparents was deported and when I was watching "Ararat" I remembered what they told me about their deportation. It was like in "Ararat", without food, water and human condition. Grandmother said me that they should be strong and optimists in order to help their children (five). They were transported by train for animals and grandfather told that all men should looked for wood when the train stopped in order to make beds. It was awful.
I want to say about the relation between Gorky and his family (mother). I think that for Gorky mother was an important person in his life. We can deduce from Gorky's picture. At the beginning I thought that he did not finish his masterpiece, but at the end of the movie I understood. Actually, Gorky finished it, but he decided to remove (I'm not sure if it is a right word) his mother's hands. Her hands is too sacred for him, too personal and I think that he wanted to keep this only for him.
I am touched by this story. I think, actually, we have here four stories: Raffi's, Gorky's, officer's and Edward Saroyan's film. And if a viewer is not attentive he can lose the movie's thread which is unique, original (this is my opinion). |

In Ararat, the viewer is supposed to get along with a non linear plot structure which allows Egoyan to deal with a multitude of issues treated on many levels and illuminated from different angles. That’s why this movie was bitterly attacked, not only by the Muslim community, but also by the Armenians themselves.
Produced in our postmodern society, devoid of ideology, the most important achievement of this movie is the fact that Egoyan skillfully avoided to transform Ararat into a mere propaganda for the Armenian cause.
I’ll let aside the other parallel themes of this film (the power of art, the artist condition, drugs, family destruction etc) and I am going to focus on the relativity of human history.
Ali’s reply is summing up the average opinion of the present western consumerist society: ”Let’s just drop the fucking history and get on with it”. That’s why the Armenian Holocaust with all its atrocities becomes a film in a film, a sort of parenthesis, even if the script writer keeps assuring us that his movie is well documented, mentioning several times Clearance Ussher’s journal.
On the other hand, in the spirit of Huntington’s “Clash of Cultures”, the Armenian genocide is justified by Jedvet Bey not by economic or political causes; the presumed Armenians cultural, religious superiority over the Turks is the origin of the massacre. Thus, Agoyan’s subtle technique doesn’t focus on the historical accuracy of facts, or on the moral culpability of the Turks in the Armenians genocide, but it skillfully maintains a complete ambiguity.
Nevertheless, Ararat has scenes of extreme powerful emotions: the dance of the singing Armenian naked girls who are going to die in the fire set by the Turkish soldiers will be hardly forgotten by any cinema fan. |

marieta, I have to say that, although you name the scene of naked dancing girls as one of the most powerful scenes in Ararat, I have another opinion.
for me, the scene when the custom's officer asks Rafi for the last time what was in the boxes(I remember the name of the recipients with unex[posed film) even if he knew very well that they hid drugs, the look in his eyes, the wish that Rafi said "unexposed film" is tearing./......
I mean, I loved that scene, Egoyan and also the actor ...knew how to suggest that the character, the customs officer wants to believe that Rafi tells the truth.
this is when we realize that if we really believe that something that we did is not wrong, it cannot be wrong. if we trully believe it....or if we trully deny the bad things _________________ Monica - that's just me! |
